Aglianico (ah-L’YEE’AH-nee-koh) - the ancient one. Maybe you've never heard of it. Maybe you've seen it mentioned in recent articles in The New York times, Wine Enthusiast, Wine Spectator, or Decanter. Maybe, just maybe, you have tasted it and fallen under its spell.

Aglianico hails from the sunny, volcanic soils of Southern Italy. Indeed, it is King of the South. It often gets mentioned alongside Nebbiolo and Sangiovese, as part of the powerful triumvirate of Italian red wines. Aglianico makes full-bodied, long-lived wines both unforgettable and powerful.

Fumo e Terra, meaning "Smoke and Earth" in Italian, highlights this wine's volcanic ancestry.  The 2018 vintage is bold and brawny with notes of leather, black olives, ripe blackberries.  Very limited.

"...a red wine of purity, complication and persistence. The engaging aroma carries all the excitement and variety of a fine-furniture showroom. The red-fruit flavor is fresh and high-toned, veined with tar and smoke, the acidity crisp. Lamb stew comes to mind." -- Mike Dunne, SF Chronicle Wine Competition judge and wine critic/author

"... offers impressive complexity with a long succession of aromas including cranberries, smoke, and baking spice. The bouquet is also heavy on bramble and forest floor. The wine shows robust fruit and balanced oak spice. The tannins are well managed, and it should last in the cellar for over a decade."  -- Pierre DuMont, Piedmont Post

I wanted to share how awesome we found the '18 Aglianico. We were doing a spiced moroccan stew last night, and paired that with it, and it was a perfect pairing + delicious on its own (so glad the label suggested that!!!). Love what you all are doing out there!

Medium-dark red. Pronounced vanilla (from oak) plus pepper, dried plums and berry preserves on the nose, all of which carry over to the taste. There is a slightly sweet flavor profile from both the oak and the fruit, modest acids and dusty tannins with an alcohol push in the finish. For those who don't mind the tannins, it is enjoyable now. Yet it will definitely keep for a decade, perhaps more.
