2019 Sangiovese "Dos Oakies"
This is the vineyard that started Vino Noceto and is still the source of some of our most profound and ageable Sangioveses. With formidable structure, reserved fruit, and pronounced, savory notes of leather, cedar, and clay, it is usually the first Single Block to sell out. 100% Sangiovese Grosso.
The story? Dos Oakies comes from the oldest portion of our vineyard, planted in 1987, between the tall, thin oak and the now-departed short, stout oak. Grapes for this selection were originally sourced from Il Poggione in Montalcino, Tuscany, Italy. Ten vine cuttings were reputedly smuggled into the country in the mid-70s by Alceo di Napoli and Paolo di Marchi, and planted just down the road from us at Terra D'Oro. [In turn, the Italians brought back a couple of red varietals to Italy.] We obtained cuttings from the nine surviving vines.
“Nicely ripened and beautifully composed with a bit of rich oak sitting gently atop its very insistent, distinctly cherry-like fruit and teasing with touches of dusty roses throughout, this finely balanced Sangiovese is just shy of being full-bodied and is an altogether lovely look at the grape. It trades bombast for precision and comes up a first-rate offering in the bargain, and, while it is so tasty as to tempt drinking right now, we would urge a few years of waiting as it will only become more refined with age. It is a wine that furthers Noceto’s standing as one of California’s most successful champions of Sangiovese.” Connoisseurs' Guide to California Wine - 91 points | 2 puffs
